Oneida County is giving away drug disposal bags. Here’s how to use them

Oneida County residents can pick up free medication disposal bags during giveaway sessions at local Kinney Drugs stores this winter and can also request bags to be delivered to their home.

Deterra Drug Deactivation bags help residents safely remove unused or expired prescription medications from their homes and reduces the chance of accidental or intentional misuse, the county said.

The bags can be used for pills, patches, liquids, creams and films.

How it works

Using an active-carbon technology, the medication is deactivated by warm water.

Users deactivate the drugs by putting them in a Deterra bag, adding water and shaking the bag. They can then be thrown away in the trash.
