Somers Partners in Prevention Distribute Drug Disposal Bags

Somers Partners in Prevention has a new strategy for combating the opioid addiction crisis – distributing Deterra drug disposal bags.

According to the community coalition’s chairperson, Kathy Cucchiarella, the devices reduce the risk of abuse, misuse, and accidental ingestion of leftover medication.

Getting rid of old or unwanted meds in the garbage is dangerous because anyone can get to it. And flushing them is a bad idea too because wastewater treatment plants aren’t equipped to remove pharmaceuticals. Medications can also escape from leaky septic systems and pollute the watershed, unintentionally exposing humans to their chemicals.
