New Mexico Campaign Highlights Dangers of Prescription Drug Abuse

It looks like this is another successful statewide effort to show the dangers of prescription drug abuse. ¬†This article, about an awareness campaign in New Mexico, has statistics that indicate it’s already showing results.

A Dose of Reality is a statewide prevention campaign raising awareness of the risks of prescription painkiller abuse among New Mexico teens. New Mexico ranks third highest in the nation for teen non-medical use of pain relievers. To combat the problem, the New Mexico Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (OSAP) launched a statewide prevention campaign to educate teens and their parents about the serious risks for addiction and overdose from prescription painkiller abuse.

In New Mexico, teen prescription drug abuse is exceeded only by marijuana use. Two-thirds of teens who abuse pain medicine report getting it from family members or friends.
