Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Case Study

Deterra Pouches Help Sheriff’s Office Fight Opioid Crisis

In 2016, drug overdoses surpassed motor vehicle accidents in cause of death in Minnesota’s Hennepin County. To help fight this deadly epidemic, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) made proper medication disposal a central part of its prevention program.

To date, HCSO has distributed more than 50,000 Deterra® Drug Deactivation and Disposal Pouches to county residents and through partner agencies, enough to destroy 2.25 million medications. Even when access to take-back events and drop-off sites was limited by the COVID-19 pandemic, the sheriff’s office was able to provide safe disposal to residents by allowing them to request Deterra Pouches be mailed to their homes.
