Meet Kayla Bergquist

Your partner in Prevention

Who i am

Hi, I’m Kayla — I work alongside organizations and health departments to help bring safe, effective drug disposal solutions to their communities. I partner closely with prevention teams to make programs easy to implement and impactful, with a shared goal of making prevention more accessible for everyone.

the importance of prevention

Primary prevention is about showing up before tragedy does. Deterra helps protect families by removing unused medications from homes, reducing risk before harm can happen. It’s a small action with powerful impact—creating safer spaces, stronger communities, and hope for healthier futures.

what i do

I help organizations:

  • Expand access to safe medication disposal
  • Strengthen prevention and harm‑reduction initiatives
  • Implement Deterra simply and sustainably

My goal: support your efforts to create safer, healthier environments for individuals and families.

why this mission is important to me

Deterra stands for something bigger than a product. It represents a proactive approach to safety, responsibility, and care. Being part of this work means helping reduce accidental misuse and supporting healthier, safer communities through education and action.

Examples of Deterra in Action

Communities are using Deterra in a variety of ways, including:

  • Harm Reduction Initiatives: Vending machines, naloxone training, overdose prevention kits, National Night Out events, and pharmacy or grocery store distribution.
  • Healthcare & Recovery Support: Post-operative handouts, treatment centers, AA/NA groups, or school-based events like D.A.R.E., orientations, fairs, and sporting events.
  • Comfort Kits: For hospice and palliative care patients and families.
  • Community Engagement: Health and wellness fairs, senior centers, awareness trainings, and partnerships with local agencies like fire, EMS, police, food shelves, and faith-based groups.
  • Direct-to- Household Mailing Campaign: mailed directly to households, making safe disposal easy and accessible without requiring travel while expanding reach to rural, underserved, and hard-to-reach populations as a scalable, cost-effective alternative to traditional take-back events.
“It’s not enough to educate people on the dangers of prescription drug misuse; we have to give them the tools to prevent it themselves.”
