Madison Chatham Coalition, Madison Memorial Home partner for safe drug disposal

The Madison Chatham Coalition has entered into a partnership with the Madison Memorial Home to educate and inform Madison Memorial Home clients about proper prescription drug disposal. As part of the initiative, the Madison Chatham Coalition has provided complimentary Deterra bags for the Madison Memorial Home for distribution to its clients.

This article includes an explanation of how to use the bags and notes that mixing drugs with cat litter, coffee grounds, etc. does not deactivate the drugs, and the mixture can still contaminate the ground and water. The article also describes what Deterra is made of and says it “provides a responsible alternative to disposing of drugs in a toilet or sink, a practice that increasingly contaminates sewerage treatment plants, rivers, streams, groundwater and drinking water.”
