It is an annual global event held Aug. 31 which seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use, according to a news release.
This day acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury as a result of drug overdose, the release stated. In addition, International Overdose Awareness Day also spreads the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable.
