The process is easy.
Tear open a black, zip-lock pouch. Throw your pills in it. Add a few ounces of water. Wait 30 seconds. Shake the packet. Throw it away.
The Deterra Drug Deactivation System kit is not a “fix all” solution to the opioid epidemic, but Westford Substance Abuse Coordinator Ray Peachey said it could be a good first step to an epidemic that has killed over 2,000 people in Middlesex County since 2010.
Westford citizens can now safely throw away their pills and opioids in a black pouch no bigger than a bag of pistachios purchased at Market Basket.
“It’s a first step,” said Peachey, who demonstrated the pouch’s usefulness on a handful of Ibuprofen Thursday. “It’s part of the progress (of fighting opioid addiction.)”
