Deterra® drug deactivation product available at all Allina Health Pharmacy locations
MINNEAPOLIS, (Sept. 8, 2015) — In an effort to encourage patients, employees and those in our communities to dispose of unused prescription drugs properly, Allina Health has partnered with Verde Technologies of Minnetonka, Minnesota to offer an easy way to properly dispose of unused medication.
Throughout the month of September, while supplies last, Allina Health Pharmacy locations will offer patients Deterra® drug deactivation pouches for free. Deterra uses a molecular absorption technology to neutralize active chemicals in prescription drugs when water is added. A small pouch can deactivate up to 15 pills, 2 ounces of liquid or 2 patches.
“As a healthcare organization, we are serious about preventing medication misuse and abuse, and stopping environmentally unsafe medication disposal practices,” says Lee Mork, director of Pharmacy, Allina Health Clinics.
In accordance with federal regulations, Allina Health facilities are not allowed to take back controlled substance prescription medications. Abuse of medications not prescribed to a person is a growing concern. Safe disposal makes medicines less available for misuse.
“We need to provide our communities with a safe and convenient deactivation and disposal solution,” says Christine Horton, Verde’s chief commercial officer. “We’re pleased that Allina Health is taking a leadership role by providing Deterra to its patients.”
Deterra® drug deactivation pouches are available in all Allina Health Pharmacy locations throughout the month of September while supplies last.
